What does a teacher of Students with Vision IMPAIRMENTS do in the school?
The informational site for all things concerning Vision Impairment in Cowley County schools.
Vision Impairment is an eye condition that a person has, that is beyond the wearing of glasses for correction. This condition looks different on every person, even when they have the same type of eye condition. Sometimes it is something they are born with, other times it is the result of an injury or accident. We have learned recently that a vision impairment may fall into one of three categories: Completely blind, (no light perception), low vision, and Cortical Vision Impairment, often known as CVI. Students may have an eye condition that worsens or one that is stable. These conditions are diagnosed by an Ophthalmologist (eye specialist) and or Optometrist (eye health provider). All students served by the Coop in this area must fall into the eligibility of Visually Impaired - Blind (VI/B). The students who have a Vision Impairment or Blindness are all offered an assessment to help teachers understand how a student learns, and this includes the use of Braille instruction. A student who has VI/ B is taught using the Expanded Core Curriculum, which has Nine areas: Assistive Technology, Social Skills, Compensatory skills, Orientation and Mobility, Recreation and leisure, Daily living skills, Career Education, Self-determination, Sensory Efficiency.
